What’s the best city to look for a job in?
22 July 2006If you’re a recent college graduate, or if you’re looking to move jobs and are willing to move locations, Forbes has just done a study on the best cities to find a job in. They looked at a number of different factors, including how hard it was to find a job, what the recent job growth rates have been, what the cost of living is, and what salaries are like. The results?
The most common places that college grads look for jobs may not be the best places to be hunting. New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and L.A. generally top the lists of places people try to find jobs, because there are so many there. But there are several overlooked cities on the list that Forbes ranks well above these cities - both because the cost of living there is so high compared to the salary, but also because more people who go looking in those cities end up unemployed.
If you want to jump-start your job search, Forbes suggests looking in these less obvious locations:
Phoenix, AZ - Because it has low cost of living combined with extremely high job growth and income growth, and is home to a number of biotech and electronics companies.
Las Vegas, NV - It has higher cost of living, but great job growth and wage growth - in fact, the best in the country.
Orlando, FL - Orlando benefits from extremely low unemployment, caused by the tourism industry and defense firms.
Bethesda, MD - Located close enough to D.C. that you can search for jobs there as well, Bethesda has its own biotech industry that has made unemployment low.
