Getting the best deals by buying clothes at seasonal sales

26 July 2006

Want to get great deals on the stuff everyone else is paying full price for? One of the easiest ways to save money, without having to put any effort into it, is to do most of your spending at end season sales. Most retailers are forced to mark down merchandise pretty drastically to get rid of it at the end of a season. This applies especially to clothes, but in some periods such as after Christmas anything is fair game.

The basic principle of this saving strategy is that you are always buying clothes for NEXT year. Most clothes aren’t going to go out of style that quickly, especially if you don’t buy anything too edgy. But retailers aren’t willing to hold onto that inventory for a year. You’ve got closet space to keep the clothes in for a year - they don’t have the shelf space. You won’t immediately get to use those clothes, but you can save around 50% on your clothing budget if you’re careful.

When are the discounts?

January-February - The big discount to look for here is the after-Christmas sales. If you’ve got something you need to buy, putting it off until then is a good idea.

For clothing, you have discounts on winter clothes starting at the end of January through February. Watch for the sales then.

June-August

Summer discounts start generally in June, but they won’t get the biggest until the end of July to early August. Wait till then, and you’ve got a huge price decrease on your hands.

What’s the biggest obstacle?

You need to RESTRAIN YOURSELF. Lots of people use the sales as an excuse to spend the same amount of money they would anyway - or they just binge on clothes because they think they’re “saving.” If you’re using the sale as an excuse to buy stuff, you’re going about it wrong. Your goal is to save money. Make a list of what you need, not what you want. Go out and get those clothes - and don’t buy more just because they’re on sale.
