The $39 Experiment - Want free stuff? Try asking
28 July 2006I just ran across a web page called the $39 Experiment. It’s a funny, smart idea that a guy had when he was buying a book of stamps. He decided to buy one for $39, 100 stamps, and send letters to every company whose product he used or had in his house and ask for free stuff. The letters are funny and worth a read, such as this one to BMW:
Dear Sir or Madam:
I’m going to be honest with you. I am a poor slob who drives a bike. Not a motorcycle – a bicycle. Please send me a BMW keychain, so I can at least pretend to have some class when I’m around people. Thank you in advance,
Tom Locke, self-esteem enthusiast
The result? Suprisingly, it turned out to be a good investment - he got back $272.93 worth of coupons and random stuff. Not all of the companies responded, but enough did that he got a pretty good stash worth of stuff. He has a full list on his site of how each of the companies responded. And because everything was from a company whose products he actually used, he didn’t end up with a bunch of coupons or junk he wasn’t interested in.
