List of State Back to School Tax Holidays

2 August 2006

The Cheap Chap brings us a timely reminder about saving money for parents – your kids are going to be going back to school soon, and you need to get ready by getting school supplies. There’s an easy way to get a discount – buy during sales tax holidays that exist in many states. Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. all have sales tax holidays prior to the school year – and you can find a list of the dates here.

One thing I would point out: it’s not just about saving on school supplies. You can also save big money on your kid’s clothing bills by buying during this period, because most states include clothing within the sales tax exemptions. Even better: many stores are discounting summer lines of clothing right now – so if you want to be extra frugal, take advantage of the tax holiday and buy your kids any clothes they can wear year round. And make sure to read the fine print – some states have restrictions, while others offer even better deals – such as Alabama, which will let you buy a new computer without paying sales tax, as long as you do it from August 4-6th. That’s an instant 7-8% savings, as long as you’re only buying stuff you’d get anyway.
