Thrifty Tip: When You Change the Oil in Your Car, Use it to Clean Rust From Your Tools

7 August 2006

Here’s a tip to clean rust off your tools for free: instead of spending $5 on some rust remover, wait until the next time you’re changing the oil in your car. Get a bucket and fill it up with sand. Put the oil in there, mixed with the sand – you want it to be mostly sand, not too much oil. A 5:1 ratio of sand to oil is good. Then just put the metal end of your garden tools into the bucket. Move them around a little and wipe it clean with a rag, and the sand will have polished the surface of the metal.
