The Most Prestigious Jobs in America
12 August 2006Harris, a polling agency, does a survey each year to find out what are the most respected jobs in America. They ask Americans how much prestige they think a job has. Somewhat suprisingly, most of the jobs you’d expect aren’t up there. Americans respect jobs that don’t make money a lot more than jobs that do. The full survey results are here. So what are the top jobs in America according to prestige?
1) Firefighter
2) Doctor
3) Nurse
4) Scientist
5) Teacher
6) Military Officer
7) Police Officer
Priest
9) Farmer
10) Engineer
Lots of jobs you’d think would be prestigious, like lawyers, bankers, and executives, were ranked lower. Part of the theme seems to be that the average American respects a job where you help people more than one where you are important and rich. It’s at least some consolation that if you don’t make much money, your neighbors like you a lot more than the rich banker or stock broker.
