Classic Interview Question: What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?

15 August 2006

It’s Just Money has a good post any job interviewee should read. It gives some guidelines in answering a common question that’s been kicking around since time immemorial: where do you see yourself in five years?

The idea is to figure out if you’re going to stay with the company and what your ambitions are. The post gives you some good advice about how to answer:

If your response is, “Hmmm… I dunno, hopefully you give me this job and I’ll still be doing this.”  You’re not going to win any points.  On the other hand, don’t overshoot.  “CEO,” “your boss” “Head of the Department (if you are interviewing for an entry level job)” are probably not appropriate responses.

Read the whole thing, along with the advice on how you should be asking yourself this question periodically anyway.

Discuss this on the Free the Drones Career Forums here.
