Live in a Hurricane Zone? Make a Financial Evacuation Kit

16 August 2006

From Sharon Harvey Rosenberg over at The Frugal Duchess comes a list of tips on how to create an evacuation kit for your personal financial information. The best of these seem to be to move everything that you can over to electronic banking and bill pay so that you don’t lose your information, to keep some cash on hand in case you need to buy something when you’re evacuating, and to keep all of your important contact information with you.

Having evacuated from Katrina myself, I can tell you this is a must-do. You don’t want to be wondering whether your important papers are a mushy pulp. And if you’re in a real disaster that keeps you from going back, you’ll find that you spend the next few weeks calling up every company you’re associated with to have them reroute stuff, to cancel services, and to give them your new contact information. Plan in advance for if you have to do this, because it’s no fun even if you have all your papers.

Discuss this on the Free the Drones Forums here.
