Homemade Bug Spray Recipes

17 August 2006

If you want a cheap, natural way to get rid of bugs, this money saving tip is for you: try making your own. There are several ways you can try:

1) Garlic-based. Just get some cloves of garlic and put them with some water and a little bit of liquid soap into an old spray bottle - any Windex-type container will do. Mix it together and let the garlic soak in for awhile. This is safe for most plants (as long as you don’t have an abrasive kind of soap).
2) Tobacco-based. Nicotine is lethal to many insects. You can either use old cigarette butts (hopefully you aren’t a smoker if you’re frugal enough to make homemade bug sprays!) or tobacco tea. Crush them up and soak them in water for half an hour with a little bit of soap. Then pour into your spray bottle. You have to store it carefully, because if you don’t put it in something airtight it won’t last long at all. Generally it’s best to use it soon after making it. Also safe for plants and gardens.
3) Detergent-based. Mix some laundry detergent or dish detergent in with water, and spray the bugs with it. It will kill many different kinds of insects.
You can find an even bigger list of recipes here if you want to try to experiment to find something even cheaper.
