List of Fun Summer Jobs for Teenagers

17 August 2006

In keeping with the earlier list of top ten fun careers, I’ve made my own list of fun part time summer jobs that you can consider for a teenager. Every year around Christmas break and during the summer teens start looking for work. So plan ahead and try to land one of these fun jobs - in no particular order:

1) Lifeguard. This one’s a classic - you get to sit in the sun, swim around some, and generally keep people safe. Try your local public pools, beaches, and any water parks in the area. Make sure you get certified for anything you’ll need to know, like CPR.

2) Babysitting. You don’t need to wait for the summer to do this, but you’ll have more free time when you’re not in school. Sit around someone else’s house watching TV - not a difficult job.

3) Camp counseler. Look outside your immediate area for summer camps that need people to be in charge of the kids. Tell ghost stories, hang out with friends your age who are also counselers, play the classic camping games - it’s a great job for teens who can get it. One other tip is to try your church, if you’re part of one. They often runs summer camps of their own.

4) Tutoring. Some kids will still be in school during the summer, and if you are one of the ones with good grades, you can pick up some extra cash by tutoring those who need summer school. You can try to find these jobs by asking around with your school counselers to see if anyone’s looking for help.

5) Amusement Park Worker. Most amusement parks rely entirely on seasonal help - and they’re more than willing to hire teenagers. Operate the rides and hang out in an amusement park - just be aware they’ve got some less appealing jobs there you might not have much fun doing.

6) Mow lawns. If you’ve got an entrepreneurial bent, try mowing your neighbor’s lawns for a little extra cash. You get to be outside getting some exercise and getting experience running your own business.

7) Dog Walker. Another business you can run as a teenager - get a few dogs that are friends with each other, and walk them at the same time for some easy money.

8) Retail Sales Associate in a Clothing Store. Sure, it’s not the most fun - but you get big discounts. If you’re a clothes nut, it’s the way to go.

9) A cushy internship. Hard to get unless you’ve got connections, but many companies will give you a good resume line without any real work to do. Ask around with your parents friends to see if their companies have an internship program. You’ll be unpaid, but it’s a pretty good gig if you can get it.

10) Give lessons in something you’re skilled at. Know the piano or a musical instrument? Well, find a student. You can get a pretty hefty price for an hour’s work.

I personally thought it was quite alright. Maybe you need a little bit more color, but I play an instrument and I might think about giving lessons.
