Reminder: Don’t Treat Buying A House Like Shopping

17 August 2006

The Budgeting Babe has a good reminder from her own personal experience: you shouldn’t treat buying a house like a shopping trip where you splurge because you like the way the house looks. Most good real estate agents know that they’re salespeople - they take advantage of your psychology to get you to buy something. The Budgeting Babe felt a strong emotional desire to buy where the numbers didn’t really work for her. That’s something you need to watch out for.

Put strict restraints on yourself BEFORE you go out looking at houses. Figure out what your price range is and stick to it, regardless of how great the place looks or whether it’s your dream house. If you can’t afford it, you can’t afford it. And if you go ahead and buy anyway, you’re locking yourself into future financial difficulties that you won’t be able to get out of easily.
