How to Dumpster Dive
23 August 2006From HollyRhea comes a post on her experience and advice on “dumpster diving,” which is basically just trying to get free stuff by jumping into dumpsters and digging in. I don’t know about the whole eating food you find in there idea – frankly, I wouldn’t be caught dead doing it. But to each his own, and many people do it either because they are in a really bad financial situation or because they don’t like the idea of waste – and as Holly points out, lots of perfectly good stuff gets thrown in there. A little less extreme idea is noted in the comments – picking up furniture and other stuff that people put out to the curb.
I looked around a little and found some other resources for people who’ve decided to do this – as with any subject, there’s probably a blog on it – and here’s the Dumpster Diving Blog. There’s a short guide to the art of digging around in them here. There are even several books devoted to the subject (although some of them are less focused on saving money and more on taking down the capitalist system of oppression by not buying stuff). There’s Dumpster Diving: The Advanced Course, a book on the politics of it and the best places to go. There’s also Empire of Scrounge, which is a book chronicling a guy who dug through the trash of the wealthy to find all kinds of free stuff.
