Tips to Get A Real Person On Customer Service Phone Lines

13 September 2006

There’s a great web site I ran across called Get Human. It’s entirely dedicated to collecting tips and tricks for getting past those automated phone services that make you run through hoops over and over again before you can actually speak to a person. It turns out that many of them have little tricks that will short-circuit the computers and force you into being connected to a human customer service representative. Some of them work with most companies – things like pressing zero or mashing the # key over and over, saying words that don’t make sense if it’s voice operated, or holding and not doing anything. I’ve actually tried the “zero” one on several companies with good results – I order pizza sometimes from Domino’s and get to avoid a minute-long request that I be a driver for them. They also have a database of various companies that have unique tricks that will get you through. Some of them install something kind of complicated as a backdoor so that people who know about it can go straight to a real person. Other companies have special numbers that will take you straight to people, but they don’t publish them. This site does – and they’ve got a couple hundred major companies listed. Time is money, and if you can save 10 minutes of fiddling through menus every time you call up the companies you have to deal with, you’ll waste a lot less of it.
