Check for Unclaimed Assets – Someone Might Owe You Money

14 September 2006

Anyone who’s been out in the real world for more than ten years or so should really run their name through a web site like this one, Foundmoney.com, that collects records from various banks, insurance companies, governments, and other entities that owe people money. Over time, stuff like this can happen without you knowing it – you might forget to claim back your rental deposit, for example. Or you might overpay your taxes, but not get contacted about it because you moved. There are dozens of random ways someone could owe you money, and often they won’t put too much effort into finding you to tell you about it. It’s free to check – just type in your last name, and they’ll show you the results from their database – although they won’t tell you exactly how to claim any money someone owes you. To do that, you have to pay $20 to get a membership.

It could be worth it, though. For example, I just typed in my last name. Someone with the same name had a CD they didn’t know about, racking up $50 payments over and over. Others had several hundred dollars owed to them by various companies. The good thing is you’ll know whether someone owes you something before you pay, and it only takes a few minutes to find out.

Discuss this in the Free the Drones Forums.
