Have A Sprint Cell Phone? You Can Get Out Of Your Contract, Free

17 October 2006

That’s because of a loophole in the fine print of the contract – Sprint has just made a pricing change to its text messages, and any time prices change, you’ve got 30 days to request a termination without a termination fee. In this case, you’ve got until the end of October. It turns out all the major cell phone companies have these clauses, and they all periodically change prices – even though few people take advantage of it. Why would it be a good idea to cancel your cell phone service? Because then you can go sign up for another contract, get a free, brand new phone, and start the clock over a lot faster than the normal 2 year contract. That’s a lot of extra value for you, given that many of the phones you can get are worth $150-$200 – and while it’s a little bit of a hassle, if you’ve got an older phone it can be well worth it. You can even sell your old cell phone, netting yourself a little bit of money for doing it.

Awesome, thanks for the heads-up! After I read this I did some digging. According to the folks at FatWallet, if you call and threaten to cancel, Sprint is offering most people 500 text messages free a month to keep them around. So if you’re not interested in canceling that’s another option.

Nice catch – I’d also point out that if you’re not a frequent text-messager I bet you could negotiate some other bonus. It can’t hurt you to call and threaten – ask them for a free month’s service, see what happens. If anyone does it, let us know what you manage to wring out of them.
